Service Learning Day was April 24th for all Worthington Christian High School students, when all students went into the community for a day of outreach. The day started with an assembly discussing the day’s plans, and then the outreach began.Service Learning projects involve helping out in the community while benefiting from a classroom feel that ties the service to the specific subject.
Many classes showed much creativity in planning their activities. Mr. Baugher’s freshmen Bible class went to the Worthington Christian Elementary Westview campus. His class told various Bible stories to the younger kids.
Nick Sieling, a freshman, said “I was planning to perform a puppet show about the Jonah and the Whale story.” The presentations were well-received.
Mrs. Hejduk’s 7th period English class assisted at a nursing home.
Along with other 7th period study hall students, I helped with the Freegeek Columbus Computer Company—Mr. Johnson led the group. We assisted with the recycling of old computers after checking to see whether they work. Freegeek's goal is to provide people with computer and internet access as the need arises.
Mrs. Walton’s Biology class went to Worthington Christian’s Westview Elementary campus, where her class prepared stations on making kids aware of their environmental surroundings. Mrs. Walton said that “The kids really want to get involved with the environment.”
Dr. Buzz’s 7th period Christian Life class fixed lunches and then packed them up to send off to the Homeless shelter.
The 7th period Art class with Mrs. Heisey made a huge poster depicting some of the residents at the Laurel Nursing Home when they were younger. They then sent this poster to the Laurel Nursing Home.Teachers of freshmen and sophomore classes at WCHS planned schedules for the service learning projects that fit with the classes’ curriculum. Not only was Service Learning Day a time of service, but also a time to learn.
The freshmen and sophomores went to a wide variety of places to inspire and help the community.
