This 2008-2009 year has been an important one for the Music Department here at Worthington Christian High School since the recent addition of the Show Choir.Show choir, by definition, is a group that combines choral singing with dance movements, sometimes within the context of a specific idea or story.
This is the first year of Show Choir for Worthington Christian High School; the choir’s inception came when two students suggested the idea to Mrs. Karen Rugg-Klapheke, the Choir teacher. Mrs. Rugg-Klapheke notes that “Many other schools have a Show Choir and we thought it would be an excellent addition to our music program!”
The Show Choir practices every Friday morning, and is choreographed by Mrs. Rhonda Maloney.
Auditions took place in the fall. “We put nine girls and nine boys in the show choir,” adds Mrs. Rugg-Klapheke.The Show Choir consists largely of seniors, most of whom have been singing with the regular choir for many years.
The first time the Show Choir performed was at the winter concert this year, singing “It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year.”
For the Spring Concert, they are planning to sing “Get Happy” and “Feels like Today.” The Show Choir also hopes to be able to get outfits sometime next year.
The Show Choir performed on Saturday, April 18th at the Educating for Eternity Silent Auction. They chose to sing “Get Happy” at the Auction.
Erin Szabo, a junior who attended the event, exclaims “I thought theywere extremely cute and they all knew their hand motions really well! I am excited to see them perform again!”
Overall, the Show Choir has had an excellent first year, and we can’t wait to see what the future holds for the members!
