Optional Chapel
A few weeks ago students had the option of going to the gym for study hall instead of attending chapel. The gym surprisingly wasn’t too full. I say surprisingly because of the amount of people that complain about going to chapel and how it should be optional. I guess that some were still guilted into coming for fear of being seen as “unchristian” by the teachers. The idea of optional chapel is a good one for several reasons. People who do not want to be there and while there talk to others and cause a distraction to those who want to listen would be in the gym free to talk with their friends without upsetting teachers and students. There have been many times where students have been moved, and caused even more of a distraction to other students who are listening because they were talking to their friends during chapel. People who need time to get homework done will have time in the gym to do so. The people who really want to listen will be able to listen and worship in peace without those who talk the entire time. The minor cutback is that there would have to be someone watching over the gym who would miss chapel and that’s about all. However, the teachers could alternate and would be doing a service to the students and other staff in the chapel. Open Chapel is a good idea that will cut down on distractions in chapel and that will lead to deeper, more personal chapels. I believe we are not implementing open chapel right now because parents want their kids to go and because they believe it is good for them. Although I believe it is not a big of deal as people make it; you are not a bad person if you want to talk with your friends or get some homework done. What I am wondering is how we could start doing this: has anyone asked any of the administrators for the option? That’s where we need to start; bringing the issue to the administration in a respectable, professional way without whining about having to go to chapel. I think kids are too afraid to ask this because they might look unchristian to the administration and may get into trouble. In conclusion, I believe it would be a great idea for the school to implement an optional chapel; it would benefit both the students that attend and those who choose to go to the gym for a study hall.
