Math Happenings at Worthington Christian High School

The Worthington Christian math department has a lot going on this spring. Johnny Kanning, a junior at WCHS, took first place in the school on the 12th grade American Math Competition test (AMC). Johnny Barlow, a freshman, also took first--on the 10th grade test. Later this spring, Worthington Christian will also be sending a team of “mathletes” to the Calvary Math Tournament in Kentucky.

The AMC is one of the most difficult and intense of all the national math tests.

The test focuses mainly on creative problem solving, and consists of 25 questions in which the students have 75 minutes to complete all of the questions. The purpose of this test is to find the best math students in the United States.

Johnny Kanning said of the math tests and competitions “I find all of the math competitions fun!” The fact that he enjoys taking the tests is probably one of the reasons he does so well in the competitions.

Johnny Barlow added that “I honestly enjoy the math competitions because I like doing math.” Clearly, enjoying math is a great motivation to succeed.

The test is “really, really rigorous,” stated Mr. Mark Pifer, a math teacher at WCHS. Kanning and Barlow both rose to the challenge of the AMC. Kanning has taken the AMC twice and has come in first on both occasions.

WCHS administers these tests as a way to challenge the students as well as to allow the students to vie for local awards. One simply has to walk into Mr. Pifer’s classroom to see a plethora of these awards.

Later in the spring, Mrs. Fischer is taking a group of 25 to 30 students to Kentucky for the Calvary Math Tournament. The tournament will be an all-day event in April. The team from WCHS leaves at about 6 o’clock in the morning and generally doesn’t return until 6 o’clock that night.

The tournament focuses both on individual and team competitions; there are even math relays. The team from WCHS always has a lot of fun and has finished extremely well for years: in fact, WCHS has taken either 1st or 2nd place the past few years.

Generally, 12 schools compete in the events. The schools hail from Toledo to Cincinnati; and, of course, Kentucky.

Mrs. Fischer said that “we really grow into a team.” Great friendships and team spirit play a key role in the success of WCHS.

Worthington Christian High School certainly has a lot to offer in the field of mathematics. In the words of Johnny Barlow: “math is awesome!”
