WCHS Dodge Ball Tournament

At Worthington Christian High School, one week out of the year is dubbed as Spirit Week or Clash of the Classes; during this week, students are allowed to dress down and are given the opportunity to compete in different competitions between grade levels. One of these competitions consisted of a dodge ball tournament that was held February 9th at the Hogue.

Teams were divided up between girls and guys and by grade level.

First, the senior guys competed against the freshman guys. Tension was in the air as the first match up started. Although the freshmen put up a good fight, the seniors beat them, and they were pushed to the bottom.

Next, the senior girls played against the freshmen girls. Each team tried its hardest; however, as was the case with the boys, the senior girls easily beat the freshmen girls, making the freshmen in last place.

Following the senior and freshmen face-off was a match between the junior guys
and the sophomore guys. In a very close game, the sophomores beat the juniors, which
meant that the sophomore guys would compete against the seniors and the juniors would
have to compete against the freshmen.

After the game between the sophomore and junior guys, it was the junior girls turn to face the sophomore girls; and, unfortunately, they lost by a landslide. Sara Katula, a junior girl who played on the dodge ball team, said that “It was so embarrassing.”

Finally, it was time for the senior guys to compete against the sophomore boys. In a very close game, the sophomore boys were able to pull off a victory, claiming the first-place title.

The night finished with the junior girls losing to the freshmen girls. The junior girls were very disappointed, but kept a positive attitude. After the junior girls’ upsetting loss, the senior girls beat the sophomore girls in a very close and intense game.

Once the girls were done, the junior guys competed with the freshmen. Both the juniors and the freshmen desperately wanted to win. In the end, however, the freshmen lost, and the junior guys moved to third place.

Fans enjoyed themselves while watching the games, and were entertained by boys
from each class pretending to be cheerleaders during the “halftime.” “That was my favorite part, when the guys acted like cheerleaders.”, said Erin
Szabo, a junior.

Although the freshmen and sophomore boys’ performances weren’t exactly memorable, the junior and senior guys definitely tried their best to imitate the cheerleaders.

The junior guys stretched, did some jumps and summersaults, and ended their performance with leapfrog. The senior guys performed a comical dance. Overall, the guys’ performance was definitely a crowd favorite.

After all the rounds were done, the sophomore guys and the senior girls got to face the faculty team.

Both of the winning student teams lost to the faculty. Luke Condon, a spectator at this event, commented that “it was really funny to watch Mr. Anglea play dodge ball.”

Overall, all present enjoyed themselves at this event. The dodge ball tournament allowed teachers and students to de-stress with some friendly competition. Both the players and the fans had a good time.
