President Obama’s stimulus package was signed on February 18th 2009 with a stated goal of setting the U.S. economy on a firmer foundation; creating new jobs for the auto industry; and helping homeowners fend off foreclosure. The stimulus package took effect on February 20, 2009.With this new stimulus package, President Obama hopes that new jobs will be found; and that those who may have lost a home will find new homes. Governors who backed the stimulus package are very optimistic that the money will help them avoid cutting their budgets further and will prevent the rise of unemployment in their hard -hit states. There were also various pledges of how the Democratic governors would be good stewards on how their money is spent.
President Obama warned that the nation’s governors who waste the stimulus money on political projects will be “called out.”In his Congress Address on February 24th, President Obama said, “The state of the U.S. economy is the number-one concern above all others; and rightly so. The economy is in a crisis; you know it because you live it.”
President Obama went on to say, “We will rebuild, we will recover and the U.S. of America will emerge stronger than before.” However, there are different opinions on the stimulus package.
Ryan Means, a former W.C. alum and Ohio State junior, said that the plan was a joke and that money is being wasted. On the other hand, Governor Schwarzenegger called the stimulus plan a terrific package; however, he was disappointed that it did not include more funding for infrastructure projects. President Obama assured the country that high school graduation rates will rise by 2020.
During his February 24th address to Congress, Obama put both Congress and America on notice when he said “75% of all high school students will need more than a high school diploma.” By 2020, President Obama guaranteed that with this stimulus package plan, America will have the highest rate of college graduates. Some supporters of the stimulus package feel that President Obama exudes the confidence to change the economy for the better in that he is reaching out to the middle- class people. The stimulus package's supporters also feel that the bill will create new jobs and that schools will improve.
Obama continued by saying that the responsibility of a child’s education begins at home and that no kid should be left a consequence from his parents’ mistakes. President Obama’s optimistic goal is to build up the economy so that America will be stronger than ever: we will be eager to see whether the U.S. gets back on track.
