Rebuild?: Worthington Christian's Girls' Softball Team Looks to Rebuild With a Young Team

Worthington Christian girls’ softball is looking to rebuild after a disappointing 4-14 season in 2008. They will be a young team, returning only three starters: Senior Angie Wigton; Junior Bekah Mack; and sophomore Allie Krebs.

The season does not officially start before Tuesday, March 24, with a home game against Whetstone which the team won 6-2. However, spring workouts and practices began on February 22.

This year’s schedule includes a total of 20 games with three scrimmages. The scheduled games are played throughout the school week. The upcoming games include an away game on Friday March 27th at Elgin and a home game against Bishop Ready on Monday April 6th, 2009.

"I feel that we are a young team and my goal is that we work as a formidable unit," junior Bekah Mack said.

“This is a rebuilding year,” Allie Krebs noted. “I expect myself and the team to improve as the season progresses.”

“I think we are going to have a decent team; nothing spectacular: but I think we will win a few,” freshmen Liz Akin said.

2nd year coaches Dave Krebs and Miss Stephanie Johnson have inspired their players. Liz Akin noted that they really taught her the game of softball, and that there is a big difference between hitting a softball rather than a baseball.

Allie Krebs said that what the coaches emphasize is progress: “Progress is a key; it is not all about winning, but trying your best,” Allie added. Liz Akin said that even though she is a freshman, she felt her contributions would help the team.

The girls’ softball team really bonds together. Liz Akin said that “Getting to know all my friends is really fun.” She went on to say “Angie is a really good spiritual leader who encourages the team to pray and incorporates God into our everyday practices.”

The unity of this team will take them a long way. Allie Krebs said, “I love the game of softball: playing with my teammates is fun, and my teammates are awesome.”

Liz Akin even added that the girls on the team have influenced her: “They are really good and they have really helped me learn the game of softball.”

Coach Krebs has also coached over 38 teams, with two years of experience coaching middle school, and now two years of high school coaching. With an experienced head coach, look for this unified team to make a run for a good year.
